Weekend Funny Business: Hello boss? I can't come to work today...

If it is all the same to you I won't be coming in to work.
The voices in my head told me to clean all my guns today.


When I got up this morning I took two Ex-Lax in addition to my Prozac.
I can't get off the john, but I feel good about it.

I set half the clocks in my house ahead an hour and the other half back an hour Saturday and spent 18 hours in some kind of space-time continuum loop, reliving Sunday (right up until the explosion). I was able to exit the loop only by reversing the polarity of the power source on exactly e*log(pi) clocks in the house while simultaneously rapping my dog on the snout with a rolled up Times. Accordingly, I will be in late, or early.


Constipation has made me a walking time bomb.


I can't come in to work today because I'll be stalking my previous
boss, who fired me for not showing up for work. OK?

Solar Power and Roofies.

Lately, I’ve been really getting into learning more about Solar Power. I've been learning how it works, its benefits and detractions.

As a young man in college (many years ago), I remember the time I had to do a “Persuasive” speech in my communications class. I chose the “Danger of Nuclear Power” and the pros- of alternative energy.  Back then, Nuclear was the rage. It was going to be our great ENERGY savior. The government was rushing to build plants. The news media made it, its darling. Nevertheless, a few of us were dead set against it (still are) because of the knowledge of the horrible dangers it could bring.

Today is a dawn of a new day. Sure, we still have Nuclear proponents, but time has verified our consensus of its danger. Now comes the alternatives.  Solar panels, wind power, geothermal, etc. Many of these have proved to be too costly (The price for equipment and energy needed to convert to electricity is greater than the return.). However, as time and technology has been poured into those alternatives, we truly do, now have affordable alternative energy solutions.

This brings me to a personal question “I’m I ready to dive into alternative power for my own home?” Financially, making the investment (up-front costs) verses the return on investment looks to be very friendly. Plus, the future of energy cost will be raising. Personally I lived by the proverb “Invest in what you use” ie. Power companies, Phone companies, and beer companies! However, the ROI (return on investment) with power companies may start to fail. Not that they won’t be making profits in the next few years, but these will be dropping as this country’s people move toward the alternatives. (Wouldn’t have been so cool, if this country was into alternative power, years ago. Think of all the wars and killing that might have been avoided.)

Here’s what I have been learning: roof top panels are a good investment both financially and socially. The cost of product and our government push for power companies to pay “Feed In” fees to private suppliers has come to be not only financial smart, but also creates a personal feeling of independence.

Can Making Fun of Yourself, be Good for Business?

Our society does find self-deprecating humor endearing, we enjoy when others reveal their life failures, especially if it’s relatable to our own. It might even be good for us to laugh at ourselves once in a while! Yet, can making fun of your Business have benefits?

We’re thinking that to a limited extent, it can. Sure, you don’t normally want to make fun of your employees, product or services. But then again, you just might want to!

Try this one out, for a restaurant: “We have the slowest service in town!” WITH THE TAG LINE: “That’s because we make each order individually with loving care!” This is a fun way to explain to your customers that you care about the food you serve and teaches them that excellent food takes time. Course, it could also be used to cover-up your poor service management! LOL

Or

How about this one for a Rock Band: “Don’t come out to hear us tonight!” WITH THE TAG LINE: “Cuz we turn the volume up way to LOUD!” This might really discourage some attendees, but will energies others. Most likely, those “energetic” ones, knowing what to expect, are the ones that will make a special effort to come out, enjoy your show, and give you the best reviews!

Now, what would it be like if a City used self-deprecating humor about itself? Let’s say a City like the one I live in, Flint, Michigan. Most all of you have heard of my city of Flint; “Murder capital of the country.” “But, we are hoping to get the world ranking soon!” “The most dangerous city in the country, flax vest await you at our border!”” When we say, built Flint Tough, we’re not talking about the cars!” “All our sports teams are named the “Flames,” cause they really are on FIRE!” “Come to Flint, if you’re looking for a job! Everyone else is too!”

Okay, okay, I could go on and on, and although this kind of humor does point a negative spotlight on my city, could it also be used to promote the City?

Could negative promotion create positive results? This might be a dangerous idea in promoting a city, especial, one that has been working so hard to destroy its own negative self-image.

Let’s think about it. Could promoting our bad boy image to the country be used as cover while we actually improve our city?!  Could someday, the very people that laughed at our city actually begin to see that it is becoming a safe, honorable place to live?

Could exploiting our negative image allow us to laugh all the way to the bank? Could marketing our City’s “toughness”, be made profitable? Sad to say, I believe it could. Sad, because our country thrives on the “bad boy” image, the western “shot’em up” mentality, gansta want-ta-be’s, and we could use that craze to make a profit!

I already regret writing this! Some of you will believe I’ve hit on a brilliant idea and actually go about implementing it. This is not what I want my City’s image to be. Not even for a PROFIT! NOT even if it cured our un-employment, not even if it put public services back on our streets.

Sometime the right way of doing things is the toughest way. “WE ARE FLINT, AND WE ARE DANGEROUS!”

Some Funny Business from our Flint area public School Superintendant and the School Board.

The Flint School District will shell out $50,000 to pay a Southfield-based company to help it save money. The review by accounting and consulting firm Plante Moran is intended to analyze "personnel costs, financials, staffing, compensation, facility usage, utility costs and other expenses," according to board documents. (Flint Journal - Mlive, Blake Thorne)


The other night I and about fifty other parents, teachers and school administrators/staff, had the opportunity to be part of a “Dog and Pony show” performed by the accounting firm Plante Moran and school superintendant Linda Thompson. Disguised as a public hearing discussing ways to cut spending within our school system, the representative from Plante Moran did an outstanding performance in pretending interest over suggestions that ranged from how to implement energy saving cost to how to save ten cents on a ream of paper.

He even had me believing his interest in our suggestions, as he listened intently, questioned, and continually urged more suggestion. That was until he was asked the question “How long has he and Plante Moran been working as accounting consultants with school districts on their budget needs?” His reply, “We have, and I personally have been at it for thirty-two years.”

Thirty-two years! This man could write the book on how schools can cut their budgets!! Would he have us believe he does not already have a preconceived outline of budget cutting areas?

So why hold this public meeting, and why are we spending $50,000 on a consultant that we already know what they will be suggesting? COVER!

Holding a public meeting and hiring a consultant firm is nothing but cover for the school superintendent and the school board to hide behind as they announce their budget cuts! I can hear it know, “We are cutting teachers’ salaries, healthcare and closing school buildings based on the recommendations of an “outside” consultant firm. Don’t blame us for all the years we didn’t do our job, blame the imperial study by qualified accountants.”

I placed the word “outside” within quotation marks in the above paragraph for this reason; use of the word “Outside” seems to indicate that they will be examining a second, professional opinion. Just as one of our school board members suggested in a Mlive interview, “This is a second opinion. I think that a fresh look and a second opinion always helps."

More like a second opinion supporting their upcoming budget, always helps!  

Let’s not kid ourselves, cuts are needed. Flint area schools have lost students in droves, either by families moving out of the area or lack of confidence in the public school system to educate our children. Yet, let’s not let the superintendant and the school board, kid us. The writing has been on the wall for years. Why have they waited until now, creating a need for “emergency” budget cuts? It’s because they haven’t been doing their job for years!

Let’s prophesies what their budget might look like. A budget that was mandated to be balanced, by state regulations, and one that has been continually delayed in its writing to the point that we’re in danger of having a “Emergency Manager” take-over our school system.

Closing of school building: understandable due to the lack of students.

Lay-off/firing or hiring freeze of schoolteachers: understandable due to the lack of students.

Cutting teachers pay: understandable due to the current State Government belief that if they lower the pay of professionals it will induce other qualified people to miraculously, want to become one!

Break the contracts with the Teachers’ Union: understandable due to the divine providence of our State Representatives and their belief that they can dishonor the contracts they once negotiated, in good faith.

Cut extracurricular activities: Yes, cut sports, cut music, cut skill center funds. They’re not going to help us reach mandated test scores (Scores that should be used as a diagnostic tool not THE TOAL baseline of how we evaluate the system.) therefore, they must not be needed in meeting a “Government (The few that know what we need better than we do) Directed”, well-rounded education!  

We don’t need an emergence manager brought into our school system. We all know the first thing they will do! Lay-off all the administrators, their staffs, the superintendant, releasing the School Board of it’s duties, and cutting all personnel not directly related to the classroom education of our students: Marketing directors, Office of Communications, Business Office, Telecommunications, (unofficial count: 29 department, hundreds of employees, many of which are luxuries our school system can not afford). Then they will consolidate services, cutting-out redundancy of programs thereby, reducing staffing! Further, they will ferret out all those school principles that are not working with our teachers, supporting, empowering, and coaching them to be better educators. Shoot, they might even create an effective, unbiased teacher/principle and administrative evaluation criteria, one including test scores, grade level development, peer and parent assessment.

Conclusion: Everyone, from parents to teachers, administrators, and staff: if you have lost that burning desire to educate our children, having lost that wide-eyed enthusiasm that you once held in the belief that you can help change a young person’s life, then either leave the “Job” or rekindle the flame!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIFE (Okay, maybe just some suggestions.)

Sometimes I sit and think about what life is all about. I think hard and as deeply as my shallow mentality will take me. I listen too and read what great minds have said or written on the subject.

I’ve compiled a list of some of their thoughts on life as well as some of my own. After rereading my list I wish I would have put more in about the search for wisdom and of love. Maybe I should add; “The wisdom of the universe can be found in the pursuit of perfect love.”

1) Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others, Responsibility for all your actions.

2) Never lose hope and if someone you know has; pass your hope onto them.

3) Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.

4) No mater how much or how little you have, share it.

5) Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.

6) Pray. There's immeasurable power in it.

7) Spend some time alone.

8) Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.

9) Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

10) Read more books and watch less TV.

11) In disagreements with loved ones, deal with the current
      situation. Don't bring up the past.

12) Never laugh at anyone's dreams. People who don't have dreams don't have much.

13) Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.

14) Be gentle with the earth.

15) Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

16) Remember that the best relationship is one where your love for
      each other is greater than your need for each other.

17) Read between the lines.

18) Memorize your favorite poem or psalm.

19) Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

20) When you say, "I love you", mean it.

21) When you say, "I'm sorry", mean it.

22) Believe in love at first sight but not if your married.

23) In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.

24) Don't judge people by their relatives.

25) Talk slowly but think quickly.

26) When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, "Why do you want to   know?"

27) Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

28) Call your mom.

29) Say "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.

30) You never fail, if you remember the lesson you learned.

31) Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

32) When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

Churchill’s, the kind of pub every College Town needs.

Flint, Michigan: I would think that no matter what College you attended there was a Churchill’s type pub in the area. It was the place to let off a little steam, meet with friends, find new friends, share common interest, and maybe even find a date.

Churchill’s if just that kind of place; it’s laid back atmosphere, cheap beer, hot food and good music in the background that’s not so loud that you can’t have a conversation, makes for the perfect college town meeting place.

WHY PEOPLE ARE LATE...
AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT!

Why is it that it’s always the most talented employee you have seems to have some kind of irritating habit! Example; Lateness.

You’re on time. You see no reason why everyone shouldn’t be on time. What is it about

time that some people just don’t “get”? Whether the perennially late person is in your personal life or your professional life, it can create stress for you to the point that it may disrupt work and ruin relationships.

Four reasons why people are late (to appointments or with scheduled assignments):

Because you make excuses for their lateness. Yes, sometime we employers cover for late arriving employees. This is mostly done because the late employee is so good for our business in other ways that we cut them a break that we wouldn’t cut for others for being late. This just empowers the late employee to continue to be late.



They’re late and they don’t know their behavior is a problem for others.

1) They’re late because they’re living up to a reputation for being late. Take this quiz. Who sang: “I’m late, I’m late...for a very important date”? We all recognize the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland. “I’m late, I’m late” was the bunny’s mantra; he said it over and over to himself. His reputation was his identity. He was the late character. Many people have become like this rabbit. They think of themselves as people who are always late so, guess what? They’re late. It becomes a part of how they think the world sees them and therefore, how they must be.

2) They’re late because they’re too optimistic. I know you’ve been told to look on the sunny side of the street but optimism can get in the way when you say to yourself, “I can make it across town in 15 minutes.” Yeah, sure, if it’s 3 a.m. on a holiday and you catch all the green lights, maybe! The optimist thinks that the car will start; the parking place will be there, the computer won’t go down, the weather will hold, planes will fly on time. They cut the time so close that if the slightest thing goes wrong--they’re late (again).

3) They’re late because there’s no reward for being on time. “Behavior that is acknowledged will increase in frequency.” This is a basic pearl of behavioral psychology. Fear, pain, boredom and anger are primary motivating factors in human beings. Unless there is a reward for being on time...or a punishment for not being on time...why not be late?

4) They’re late because they’re “drama queens.” Don’t let the title fool you. At least half of all “drama queens” are male. A true drama queen may even be addicted to their own adrenaline.

If you’ve recognized your boss or yourself or your teenager or your spouse. Now what can you do about it? A problem can’t be solved until you make it important enough to solve. Decide that this is an issue that you want to do something about. Once you’ve decided “Yeah, I’ve had enough,” here are five things you can do.

1. Come clean. Tell your late person what effect their lateness is having

on your job performance, your relationship. Use only “I” statements, not “you” statements. “I’m uncomfortable with having to cover for you.” “We’ve got this scheduling system and any lateness puts a strain on the system--there’s no margin for error.”

2. Don’t label someone late or make jokes about their lateness. It makes it part of how they see themselves and they become stuck with it as a behavior pattern even when they don’t want it.

3. If you’re late person is of the optimistic variety, diplomatically direct this person to reality. The optimist requires retraining and you’ll need patience with this person but don’t just do nothing. A reassuring tone of voice and simple statement of fact...repeated frequently...will help the late person rethink their priorities. “Let’s treat ourselves to a little stress reduction,” you say, “and get this out early.”

4. If they’re late because they sincerely love the action and chaos it creates, you’ve got a special problem. They’re action junkies or drama queens. It’s OK for them to be that way but it’s also OK for you to not want to participate. Take yourself out of the Game. “I know it’s exciting to nearly miss an airplane but it’s not fun for me anymore.” “It was exhilarating the first time we had to get that report done overnight but it’s getting boring now.” Bored is the last thing the drama queen wants to hear. They create chaos to avoid boredom. If you express the idea that the chaos is now boring, they are apt to change.



5. Reward behavior you want repeated. I had to work with a chronically late person and I did not have the sophisticated tools listed above but I knew that you train dogs by rewarding good behavior. It works with people too. I had an idea but I didn’t know if I had the nerve to pull it off. I bought a gift and wrapped it in paper and ribbon. I had it with me and when the appointed hour came I told myself that if he arrived on time, I would reward him with the gift. If he did not arrive on time, I would tell him, “I was going to give you this gift if you arrived on time...but, maybe next time,” and then put the gift away. The next appointment, he was on time and I gave him the gift. He was always on time after that. When was the last time you thanked or rewarded someone for being on time?

It proved to me that people can do it. They can be on time. Being on time gets to be a habit.
