Running a Business Can Kill You!

You need a vacation when….

1) You find yourself thinking of reasons why you need a vacation.
2) You start thinking of early death from job stress as a comfort.
3) You start hallucinating tropical fish in the company water cooler.

Norman Vincent Peale tells the story of a man that told his physician that work was feeling like a wave covering over and drowning him. He said that every night he fills his briefcase full of work to do at home. When the physician asked “Why” the man replied “I have to get it done.” He fumed, “I am the only one who can do it!” “Everything depends upon me!”

“If I write you a prescription, will you follow it?” Asked the doctor.

Thinking it was some kind of medication the man said “Yes.”

The doctor wrote out these words on a piece of paper. “Take one hour a day off to go for a walk. Take one day off a week and use half the day in a cemetery.”

Astonished the patient demanded, “Why should I spend a half day in a cemetery?”

“Because” answered the doctor, “I want you to wonder around and look at the gravestones of men who are there permanently. Meditate on the fact that many of them are there because they thought like you do, that the world rested on their shoulders. Sit there and think about how the world will go on without you just as it’s done without them.

Wooow! Pretty sobering thought, hu!

A Confidence Scheme

Some may think that confidence is the opposite of humility. People sometimes even equate confidence with arrogance. That is a mistake. Rather than being the opposite of confidence, we need to understand that humility is an entirely separate issue.

The truly confident person is one that can fully embrace and celebrate their strengths and talents, and yet never forgets their humanity. They can admit mistakes and failings and yet never feel like a failure. It’s true, your failures do make you stronger. Nothing you endeavor in is ever worthless. You always walk away with more knowledge, being more prepared to attempt and succeed in the next endeavourer. 

A person must live in gratitude for the abilities they have been given and never fail to see the giftedness in others. Never be jealous of others talents but willing to learn from what other’s talents can teach us. Understanding that within ourselves we too have a inner genius that must be in continuous development. We must always be learning, always trying and never, never give up. These elements make up true and lasting confidence.

Living with confidence because you’re a genius!

You’ve heard it said “Necessity is the mother of invention” Well I say “Creativity is the mother of invention”. I define genius as finding your very own inner creative menes. That’s right, menes, our bodies are built with genes, that is what makes each of us as physical individuals. Our menes are the parts that make up our personality. Just as each of us have physical genius: or physical abilities such as balance, flexibility, reflexes, strength, movement, all equaling our physical capabilities. Our menes are the parts that make up our personal genius that we are mentaly capable of. 

It’s not just about your tested mental IQ. To find the sum of your menes or genius takes the wiliness to commit to the search of your genius, testing and looking for its limits and abilities just as we do with our bodies. It doesn’t just come to you like a bolt of lighting, sure some find their physical genius early like the ability to play pro baseball while others get to publicly display their mental genius like the famous genius of Einstein or Leonardo. Just because you’ve not been on television or someone hasn’t written a book about you does not mean you’re not a genius! Most genius is un-published! It can be found in the everyday of living. It’s found in the little bits of brilliance of our daily living and it can be developed into adding value to everyone else’s daily living! There is no test created for your personal genius. You have to write it yourself!

Everyone has their own inner genius for which they are superior at doing. We all have a genius within our own nitch. Think about this! If you where stranded on a desert island and living in a cave and one night you heard something rustling around in the bushes outside. Who would you really want to be there in the cave with you? Einstein!? What would he do? Confuse the creature with his theory of gravity. No! you want someone with the genius of bravery or the genius of survival or the genius of mimicking the scary sounds of a shell being racked into a sawed off shotgun.

You should be committed! It all starts in the doing. One step at a time, one foot before the other. Committed to the long walk. 

Here are the first steps! Takes approximately 20 minutes.

1) If you liked what you have read here or want to learn more, commit to a day and time for continuing to stopping by this site and reading what’s going on.

2) Think about 10 things you like to do. Count them out on your fingers.

3) Write a personal resume. Not a work resume but a resume of your life. Write down the things that you like to do: fishing, reading books, watching movies, painting, organizing your sock drawer, talking to people. List everything you like to do.

4) List the education you have: classes that you liked taking, books you have read, life experiences, places that you have traveled to, things that people have taught you.

5) List jobs that you have done, not just paying jobs: Pick out the parts of the job you liked best or feel you did best at.

6) When you’re finished just set it aside for the night. The next day look for the pattern of things that you really like doing or felt good doing. Be proud in seeing the things you like to do and look how those are the things you always seem to see though to completion.

7) On a big piece of paper draw a large inverted triangle: with the point at the bottom, the widest area at the top. Write out words or short sentences representing the thing you like to do or are good at within the triangle.

8) Now start thinking about the list and watch as you melt the overall list into just a couple of short sentences that can be written underneath the point at the bottom of the triangle. Those sentences are what you should be doing. Don’t be inhibited with coming to a conclusion that it doesn’t look to be rational. Don’t look at “what you should be doing” as needing to be practical. Don’t see the outcome as not having any monetary reward. Just look at it for what it is.

9) Next time we get together we will discuss how to make what you like to do into a money making reality.

10) I acknowledge I do not have the genius of grammar, spelling or in the written word but I am better at it than I used to be and will be better at it as I continue to work this menes’ muscle. Thanks for your genius of understanding my inadequacies.

Finding Your Life Passion!

Make a list of the things you do for fun, or that you really enjoy. Include in the list the parts of your job that you really like, the things you volunteer for. Example: Mentoring children (Working with your church or a community organization), type of sports, the arts (Music, painting, poetry, theater, ect.), organizing things (At work or home), reading, writing, meeting people, eating.

How do you choose to spend your free time?

This list is of your passions; the things that you love to do, or would do simply for the pleasure they bring you.

Now, write down the names of people that you admire, and why you admire them. For example, you might admire Patch Adams for choosing to step out of the traditional role of medicine and creating new ways of healing and connecting with his patients while also having fun. You might admire Oprah Winfrey for choosing to reveal her truth, at a time when concealing is the norm.

Name as many as you can think of. When you're done, look at the list and know that what you appreciate about others is also in you. You are attracted to these qualities, because they speak to you, and they speak to you, because they are a part of your path. This is your Attraction list.

Now, make a list of the things you do naturally without even thinking about it. (You may want to ask others for feedback, as it's common for them to see talents in us that we don't see ourselves) Such natural talents may be: an eye for detail, a great sense of humor, a nurturing side, the ability to focus intently, or being playful. (Consider also, the things you've done that have gotten you into trouble--oftentimes if you turn them around and look at the positive aspects of it, you'll find a gem of a natural talent that you previously hadn't appreciated)

These are your genius. Genius comes easily and profoundly, without needing to expend a lot of energy. Some people are geniuses at math or music; but there are lots of other types of genius as well. There are genius mothers, genius teachers, genius listeners, and genius independent thinkers.

We are meant to use our genius in service of our Life Purpose. 

Now, imagine you're a billionaire with no worries about money. What would you do? Add those things to the list, even if you don't do them now. This is your No Worries list.

Now look over your list of  Passions, Attraction, Genius and No Worries lists,

Let them all melt together.

Delegating work loads and how a lobster dinner taught me a lesson!

Delegating is one of the most important skills a person can have. Anytime there is a multiple of goals to be accomplished, a good business owner or manager needs to be able to delegate the work load, otherwise they will find themselves caught up in a tizzy with too much to do and not being able to focus on the tasks that require their specific skills.

Remember this scene from “When Harry met Sally”

Sally looks at Harry seductively, and begins to illustrate, in the middle of the busy restaurant, how easily women can convincingly fake an orgasm. With a loud and long display of pants, groans, gasps, hair ruffling, caresses, table poundings, and ecstatic releases, she yells: "Yes, Yes, YES! YES! YES!" The entire restaurant is quieted down and attentive to her realistic act. This is followed by the film's funniest punch line, delivered by another customer who tells the waitress, "I'll have what she's having"

Well, somehow in my mind I was able to connect this scene to leadership. Here’s the connection: when you go to the restaurant you are delegating the food peroration to someone better trained and experienced in cooking than you are. You profit by not having to spend the time preparing the food, setting up, cleaning up and you get a great meal to boot!

It’s the same thing with your business or organization. You have to delegate the work load: you’ve have orders to full, vendors calling, business lunches, clients to smooch, marketing meeting, advertising decisions, quality control problem, problems, problems, and problems!

Oh and don’t forget the EMPLOYEES:
Drug testing, background checks, employment verification, salary surveys, Social Security verification, employee payroll, new hire reporting, garnishment transfer and management, hiring, training, disciple, drafting of handbooks and policies, dispute resolution and more and more stuff!

I know you skipped reading all that stuff about employee management and so would I. It’s just too much to think about let alone actually manage. Sure you might have a HR department but wouldn’t be great to just wish it all away!

We Have to Change Our Ways!

As Tom Sumner (Flint resident and radio host) so pointedly explains in his story “Would I have the blues?” that there are two kinds of people. Those that think the glass is half full (Positive thinkers) and those that think the glass is half empty (Negative thinkers). He submits that there’s a third group of people, those that say, “Hey can we get some more water in this glass over here?!”

The Positive Thinkers, or the doers, are always doing their best with what they have and the “Negtivos”, are those that complain about what they do have, both have one thing in common, limited resources.

Aren’t “resources” the number one need of any business? Be it tangible resources like products to sell or intangible resources like ideas for a new product to sell. Business is about “resource availability”.

Crap, even a genius like Einstein had limited resources. He might have understood the math but could he host a radio show like Tom Sumner does, or create an advertising campaign like The Spencer Agency can? Could Einstein make a delicious sandwich like Tracy Whipley of the Lunch Studio can make? I don’t think so. (Okay, so maybe Einstein could make a great sandwich, but resource data is limited on the subject!)

That’s why growing a business or keeping a business open is about gathering resources.

What resource is your company missing?

It used to be a common view that the Human Resources department in large companies was more sophisticated, more professional and more forward-thinking than what you would expect to find from HR in smaller companies.
We all presumed that the “big guys” knew what they were doing.
But current thinking among some practitioners now challenge that presumption.
The pendulum of thought has begun to swing the other way. Indeed, sophisticated has become cumbersome,professional has become bureaucratic and forward-thinking has created a chasm of credibility between philosophical concepts and the practical realities that managers deal with every day.
Remember the K-I-S-S principle (keep it simple, stupid)? Many large organizations seem to have forgotten that common sense caution as they saddled their reward programs with ever more forms, procedures and bureaucracy.

The Evolution of Performance Appraisal
A good example of HR systems gone wild is the difference between a small company performance appraisal and the convoluted processes often followed by large companies.  Herein lies a stark contrast not only of styles, but of methodologies and core beliefs that a more complex better way will increase the effectiveness of employee reward programs.
This growth of complexity is commonplace; by the time an organization achieves a certain population size HR feels compelled to complicate their processes – usually in the name of increased employee sensitivities and streamlined procedures. What worked well before (when the business was smaller) is suddenly suspect, deemed somehow less effective, less desirable.
What began as direct cause and effect, performance followed by assessment = reward, suddenly becomes much more complex, more confusing to some, more aggravating to others. Communication becomes critical, but is often flawed and ineffective as both employees and managers question the additional complexity.
What follows is a brief comparison between how small and large companies approach the critically important performance appraisal process.
The Small Company Experience
§  The employee’s performance is assessed against what is expected of them.
§  Performance discussions usually take place on the anniversary of either employment or promotion.
§  Forms are basic, even simple. They may not be standardized, and one or two pages are usually enough.
§  The process doesn’t take a lot of time. Meetings tend to be short and focused, so both parties can get back to work.
§  What the boss says is what is going to happen. The approval chain is abbreviated; messages from the performance meeting are typically what actually happens.
§  The money discussion (pay increase) is front and center, a cause-and-effect dialogue. You have performed thus and so, and your salary will be changed from “x” to “y.”
How Large Companies Tend to Operate
§  The employee’s performance may be assessed against other employee’s, as much as against what is expected of them based on their job description.
§  Performance discussions use a Focal Point strategy, where everybody is reviewed at the same time. For managers with more than two or three subordinates, this represents a challenge in terms of time spent and quality of assessments.
§  Managers are often required to use intricate, multi-part, multi-page forms designed by a specialty section within HR.
§  Employee performance as a group may be viewed against a desired bell-shaped curve of results.  Individual assessments may later be modified to fit the expected/budgeted shape of the curve.
§  The boss makes upward “recommendations,” which may or may not be approved. Thus, the conversation with the employee ends on a “we’ll see” basis where money is concerned.
§  Other topics like developing future performance, improvement strategies/action plans, and “where are we going?” discussions may predominate. Sometimes talk of a pay is deferred, raising the question of whether performance actually relates to reward.  Meanwhile, the employee wants to hear about a raise.
§  Employees could feel lost in the bureaucracy, a faceless ID number trapped within a huge spreadsheet. For them, cause and effect becomes a pep rally concept, with little connection between individual performance and reward.
So what has been lost as the organization grew larger? Has it become more impersonal, forms-centric, process controlled and standardized? And is that better than before? Perhaps more has been lost than gained.
How did the organization evolve itself into something potentially less helpful, less effective? Perhaps the poking and prodding of systems and procedures in the name of improvement went too far, until they created a convoluted and twisted version of their desired state.
Perhaps we’ve let specialists over analyze the psychology of a boss rewarding a good performer. We’ve exchanged hard decisions with real impact for a muted “everyone deserves something” approach. The following scenario is common.
§  Sub-function specialty groups are created within HR, be they Training, Management Development, Succession Planning or a host of others popularized in prevailing industry jargon. Each group has advocates that push an agenda of change.
§  These specialty groups must justify their existence to validate the worth of their profession and their mission. The result is additional layers of forms, procedures and extra time constraints for managers to struggle with.
§  Over time, these experts lose sight of the managers they should be trying to help. They don’t understand the beast they’re trying to tame. By pressing their own agenda, they tell management how to assess performance.
§  Ultimately these groups become blockers, getting in the way of a smooth-running operation. Objecting managers tend to respond with a campaign of passive resistance.
So can we make our large companies “feel” smaller when dealing with employees? How do we reverse the model of increasing complexity and confusion?
When the state of affairs has gone off the tracks, how many times have you heard – or used the phrase, “let’s get back to basics?”
Perhaps that thought could be useful today, no matter what size organization you hail from. Simply return to the fundamentals of performance management, where performance is assessed, which in turn leads to reward.
It doesn’t have to be any more complicated than that.

It doesn’t make you comfortable and deep inside it makes you just want to get what you came for and get out.

I once moved to a city just because every 7-11 store (I’m a Slurpee junkie) I went into all had sales folks that smiled at me. Really, no kidding! I had been living in Miami and was feeling bad about how everyone there seemed to be so grouchy. The friendly service I found made me believe that everyone in that town was happy. And by god they were (for the most part)!

So what do your employees’ faces say to your customers?

Do you want to make increase sales, add on’s and impulse buys? Do you want customers returning to your business? Do you want the people that come into your business talk to their friends about how nice your place is?

Teach your employees to smile!

Tip number one:
Smile at your employees and they’ll smile too.
Teach your employee the importance of the “first impression”.
Have a short training time with your employees about appearance and its effect on customers.

Oh, oh, more Guy Gossip

One of the guys, I won’t reveal his name so as not to embarrass him, about the stupid idea that will be explored here, joined our normal gathering of local downtown “Good Fellows” at the coffee shop as we do every Tuesday morning. He says, “I got an idea I want to float by y’all.” (Y’all, spoken like a man that’s spent too much time in the south, maybe Southern Florida, maybe Miami/Ft.Lauderdale.)

“I’ve been thinking about what should be done with the Genesee Tower building.” (Again, for those that don’t know or haven’t been reading this bloggy, thingy or whatever you call this: In short, our local City government has been saddled for a payment, mandated through the State Courts, of 8.4 million dollars to the Genesee Tower property owners, who originally paid fifty thousand dollars for the building a couple of years ago.)

One of the local businessmen that regularly attends our little impromptu gathering, tried to squash the topic by reminding us, “We figured out the Tower thing last week. We’re turning it into a men’s club.”

Not to be discouraged, our recently repatriated Flintoid continued, “Well, I talked that idea over with the wife and well, she didn’t really take to that idea.”

“You told your wife?!” as the look of dismay and broken trust covered each man’s face.
“She’ll tell my wife and she’ll tell another and by the end of the day they’ll all have heard. Might as well kiss the “Big Lobowski Men’s Group” goodbye, you’ve just killed it, dude!

Another of the guys bravely piped in, “I got to be honest with you, I got so excited about the men’s club idea that I told my wife.” He hung his head down, “Let’s just say the excitement pretty well died, especially when it came bedtime. If you know what I mean.”

 “Ahhh, go ahead and tell us. I got to confess I told my wife too. She told me if we were going to start a men’s club then she and the girls are going to start a women’s only club, called “PeePee’s.”

In a way that only a half breed Northern/Southern boy can speak, either real slow or real fast, our returning Flintiod, sped fast through his idea.

“Turn the Genesee Tower into a homeless shelter! Last year, in Flint, almost three thousand people were recognized as homeless and it’s growing, a majority of them are housed by other means than shelters. The average number of “shelter living” homeless is near around fifteen hundred. Flint has about five, stable shelters. We take all their residents and staff; consolidate ‘em into one building. That way all the shelters won’t be scratching for the same dollars to keep their doors open. All the funding will go into one administration, all the people into one building, all the staff from the shelters consolidated into one place. No more having individual shelters holding mortgages or paying rent at multiple locations. All the energies into one place not being spread it all over town. No more duplication of resources!”

“Ho, slow down, hold your horses!” one of the guys, doing a bad imitation of a urban cowboy, says. “Homeless people all over the streets of Downtown?!”

“Naa, dude” he continued, “they’ll all be busy working or training or going to school. We already have a bunch of training facilities around town helping to find schooling and funding for education. We also start a Day Labor and job placement staff inside the facility. These people are not homeless because they want to be. They’ve got skills. Many of them are no different then us. We’re all just a couple of missed pay checks or a pink slip away from loosing our homes too!

Question; “What about panhandling and crime?”

“We outlaw panhandling. As for crime, do you know how many prisoners come out of jail, homeless? What better way to monitor and rehabilitate them and to keep then out of the circumstance that got them into trouble in the first place.

Plus again, there is no reason why they need to be on the streets, they’ll have classes to attend, jobs to work, chores to do, community service hours to fulfill, curfews and nightly activities.

I understand that some of the religious organization might not be on board with this idea but, we let them hold events within the facility, heck, they’re going to be apart of running the place. I don’t see any problem with religious groups holding services there. It builds moral strength, principled thinking and encouragement.

By consolidations all the staff from all the shelters means each of the residents will get personal mentoring and guidance. That will help keep the residents focused and let’s councilors keep their jobs too.”

A skeptic protests; “Pie in the sky, you don’t understand that the staff and management teams are not going to give up the power they have over their organization. Too much politicking, even if they have an altruistic heart for the mission.”

“We make ‘em do it. We’ve got Metro Community Development already here in place, through the State mandate. They can oversee the organization. We take all the shelter managers and staffs from each of their departments: guidance counseling, mentoring, training developers, community service organizers, marketing (grant writing and donations), food service, housekeeping and we take each group individually into a room, tell them what we’re going to do and then leave, locking the door behind us, waiting until they come together with a plan on how they’re going to make it happen.

Once you have the peoples’ will to do something, it’s going to happen.”

Consolidation of services: Some smart politician is going to get ahead of this idea, and the people are going to follow.

So Nice of You to Stop By.

Thanks you all so much. Because of your overwhelming subscription rate to Funny Business By Stephen James, we now have the third most read blog on my block!!! Okay, so were really tied for third.

Was I just making a joke or was I heralding an accomplishment? Either way I’ll take it!
